Simple DIY Thank You Gift

Happy November y’all! People are really starting to freak me out with this whole “there are only 6 weekends until Christmas” thing. Excuse me…WHAT!? How is that even possible?
So, it finally feels like things are really happening at our house! The sheetrock is done, the walls are primed and painted, the floors are going in as we speak, and the trim and doors should be going in soon. Dare I say that we are in the home stretch!?
Today, I am sharing a simple thank you gift that is perfect for any occasion. I created it specifically as a baby shower favor, but you could use it for anything (teacher or hostess gift, for example). People in my life are going to get sick of receiving these cute little lip balm printables, but I can’t help it…they are just too cute and couldn’t be any easier to put together.

And, I wanted complete the favor with a homemade salted caramel chocolate chip cookie and some yummy smelling hand sanitizer from Bath & Body Works. Aren’t you loving their new bottle design?!

For those of you that don’t want to create your own version, I have listed a couple of options in my etsy shop that you can instantly download. If you want to save a couple of bucks, you can easily make you own. I used PowerPoint because that’s the only thing I know how to use to make printables (weird, I know). Also, if you are looking for a specific holiday or occasion, there are lots of cute free printables out there. Just google “free eos printable”. There are several customizable options on etsy…I just couldn’t find one that was exactly what I was looking for, so I created my my own.
After you have it printed out and cut down to size, you use a 1.5 inch circle punch to create the opening for the lip balm. Then unscrew the balm, center the bottom half under the punched out hole, and screw the lid back on to secure the paper.
I love how easily you can change it up based on what color of lip balm you purchase or how you package it. I ended up placing mine in white gable boxes to make it easy for people to grab on their way out.

If you are looking for a quick and easy thank you gift, then these are a perfect option. I couldn’t be more thrilled with the way they turned out!

Favorite Baby Products

Now that my son Ryland is almost 9 months old and I am finally feeling like I’ve got things figured out (HA!), I thought it may be helpful to share some of our favorite baby products with all of you. As it is with most first time moms, I had absolutely no idea what we were going to need. I know everybody’s needs are different, but I tried narrowing it down to just the items we love and wouldn’t want to live without. Honestly, most of these aren’t true necessities, but they sure make life a heck of a lot easier!
EAT
1.Trend Lab Burp Clothes: We got three sets of these burp clothes as gifts and used them so much that I ended up using a gift card to buy another set. They are great quality, small enough to toss in your diaper bag, and it doesn’t hurt that they come in such cute prints.
2.Mamas & Papas Booster Seat: We opted for this booster seat over a high chair, and so far, we have loved it! Particularly, that it is a space saver and it will grow with him as he gets bigger.
3.Boon Lawn Drying Rack: Cute and functional…need I say more!? And we also love the twig accessory that coordinates with it.
4.Munchkin Latch Baby Bottles: I’m no expert in baby bottles considering Ryland has had less than ten his whole life. These are the only ones we have tried, but for breastfed babies, I highly recommend them!
5.HealthPro Baby Scale: If you are a breastfeeding mama, you NEED this. This scale allowed me to keep up with how much Ryland was eating (3-4 ounces in 8 minutes by the way…every two hours!). You just weigh them before and after they eat and then you know exactly how much they are taking in. This gave me the peace of mind I desperately needed during that crazy time…perfect for first time moms!
6.DRIA Nursing Cover: I am obsessed with this! It feels so luxurious, but at the same time lightweight and breathable. It also doubles as a carseat cover. Just calling it like I see it…but this is pretty expensive for what is basically a yard of fabric with a hole cut out, but if I were divide the cost by the number of times it has been used, it is worth it for sure. In my opinion, it is much better than those apron-style covers and provides complete coverage!
7.Medela Harmony Manual Pump: I know I’m in the minority on this one, but I preferred using a manual pump over an electric pump. Granted, I only pumped once a day, but it was just easier to me. It is also small enough to thrown in my diaper bag and super easy to use.
8.Baby Led Weaning Book: I started out with the intention of making baby food purees, but after a bad experience with bananas, I started researching baby led weaning and never looked back. I can not say enough good things about BLW, and everyone is always amazed at what and how much Ryland eats. I love how easy it is to implement and the fact he can eat on his own, allowing me to enjoy my meal as well.
PLAY
9.Skip Hop Roll Around Toy: Ryland loved this toy and it was something that he could play with at a very early age.
10.Kick and Play Piano Gym:  This kept him entertained, and allowed me to get things done. He enjoyed kicking the piano keys and reaching for the hanging toys.
11Baby Einstein Activity Jumper: One of the best purchases we’ve made! We found one on craigslist and he plays in it every morning after breakfast.
12.Combi Activity Walker: This was a craigslist find as well! We got it a couple of weeks ago, and it quickly became a favorite. He is able to “walk” around the whole kitchen while I am busy cooking
SLEEP
13.American Baby Company Fitted Sheet: I just registered for these because they had the best reviews on Amazon and were reasonably priced. They are soft, inexpensive, and we have had zero complaints. One tip is to use the following layers on the mattress: waterproof mattress pad, crib sheet, waterproof mattress pad, crib sheet. That way, if your baby’s diaper leaks in the middle of the night, you can just take off the top sheet and mattress pad and you are left with a clean set underneath!
14.Sound Machine: This sounds like a fan and has been perfect for blocking out noise. I especially love the small size and how easily it can be hidden in the nursery. Great for traveling as well.
15. & 16.Young Living Diffuser & Lavender Essential Oil: I was not sold on essential oils until I tried diffusing lavender when Ryland first stated sleeping on his own. Call me crazy but, I really could tell a difference in how peacefully he slept.
17.NuRoo Swaddler: This is a MUST HAVE! I bought the Miracle Blanket because of the good reviews and hated it. I liked the Aden and Anais swaddle blankets, but that was too much work in the middle of the night. I saw the NuRoo and decided to try it out. It was so easy to use, and Ryland instantly started sleeping longer at night. My only complaint is that the velcro starts to wear but keep in mind, we only had one of these and I was washing and drying it every other day. Next time, I will purchase two or three!
GEAR
18.Rock and Play Sleeper: I always said that our kid would not sleep in the bed with us, but when you are sleep deprived and the only way you can get your baby to sleep in on your chest, you do it. And so, that’s how he slept…for two months! After reading a lot about this sleeper, I finally gave in and bought it. It’s small, easy to move and it actually gave me some hands free moments. I also used this when I went back to work because it is easy to travel with, and he could sleep in my office while I was counseling or doing paperwork.
19.Munchkin Changing Pad Liners: If you have a cloth changing pad cover, you need these!
20.Black + Decker Pivot Vacuum: Kids are messy and this thing is so powerful and easily cleans up any mess our little one makes.
21.Munchkin Diaper Pail: I almost didn’t register for one of these because I figured I could just use a trash can, but my sister-in-law swore by hers and that was all the convincing I needed.
22.ERGObaby Original: I use our carrier at least once a week. Especially now that he is getting heavier! He seems to be more content when I wear him, and it has been super helpful if it’s near his nap time and I have to be out of the house. Early one, I used the K’tan and the Solly Wrap and loved both of those as well. The K’tan is great if you aren’t comfortable with wrapping yet, and the Solly is just amazing in general!
23.OXO Tot Wipes Dispenser: Anything that makes diaper changing a little easier is a win in my book. We decided not to use a warmer because we didn’t want him to get used to it at home, and freak out in public when we had to use cold wipes.
24.3 Sprouts Storage Bin: This thing is so sturdy and holds a ton! I love all of the different options as well. We have the fox and the owl.
25. 4Moms Breeze: We found one of these on craigslist for $100 and it has been amazing. Setting up and taking down with one hand was the biggest selling feature for us. Easy “Breeze”y. He actually slept in the bassinet portion until he was 6 months, and then transitioned to the crib like a champ.
26.4Moms Infant Tub: 4Moms thinks of EVERYTHING. We have used this from day one and are still currently using it, even though he’s probably way to big. Love, love, love! And reasonably priced for one of their products.
ESSENTIALS
27, 28, 29.Honest Company Soap, Wipes, and Laundry Detergent: I was definitely paranoid that Ryland would have sensitive skin so we started out using Honest products. I loved them so much, that we stuck with them. I know there is a lot of negative stuff out there lately about the Honest Company, but we have had a good experience with their products.
30.MAM Pacifiers: Ryland didn’t take a pacifier until we started sleep training at 6 months. We only use one at nap time or when he’s teething and these are our go-to.
31.Honest Company Diapers: These are the best diapers and they are so stinking cute. TMI, but every poopy diaper was a blowout with Ryland, until we started using these. As soon as I opened one up, I could instantly feel how they were thicker than the Pampers we had been using. I set up a 6 week auto-delivery and have never had to go out and buy diapers as they are delivered to our front door. I feel okay splurging a little on these because we aren’t buying formula. Again, anything that makes life easier (and less messy) is a win in my book.
32.Exergen Temporal Thermometer: No complaints with this thermometer! Especially helpful when he is teething.
33.Gerber Soothe Colic Drops: Okay, I could go on and on and on about these because they were the one thing that changed our fussy butt baby into a happy baby. After every feeding, Ryland would throw the biggest fit. I tried omitting all the normal triggers from my diet and didn’t notice a difference, so we tried these. After 2-3 days, he was a different baby! And his late night crying fits stopped as well. If we accidentally missed a day, we knew immediately because he was so upset the next day. Totally worth every penny… and FYI, Amazon was much cheaper than anywhere else we found them. We stopped using them when he was 5 months and he has been fine ever since.
34.Ello Water Bottle: This one is for you, mama. A water bottle that you can use one-handed is a MUST! This one was/is my favorite.
———————————————————————————————–
Whew! Such a long and loaded post, but if any of this info is beneficial, then I’ve done my job. The newborn stage was so difficult for me and some of these products were total lifesavers! It was a trial and error process to figure out what we needed but next time around, we’ll be much more prepared.
One thing that made the registering process easier was setting up our baby registry on Amazon.  It’s universal and you can add products from any website. I would say most of our gifts came from that, especially from out of town guests that couldn’t make it to our showers. And you get a 10% discount on your registry items or a 15% discount if you are an Amazon Mom subscriber. You also get a free welcome box valued at $35.  To me, the discount alone is worth setting up a registry! Create an Amazon Baby Registry HERE
I love hearing from experienced mamas about their favorite things…so what are/were some of your MUST HAVES?

Building our Home {PART 1}

I wanted to do a quick update on where we are in our building process. We found our lot on Craigslist several months ago, and it officially became ours on June 17th! You can see how overgrown it is in the picture below and how much work was require before we could begin building.
After choosing the lot, we met with our floor plan designer and discussed with her what we were wanting. We ended up working with a friend of mine that does that for a living. She did such a wonderful job capturing exactly what we were envisioning and was more than patient with us as we made changes. Below is the preliminary plan that she came up with for us. The only major thing we changed with the layout is the storage room on the back corner. It blocked the view from the back porch and cut off the path to the back door from the driveway, so we decided to get rid of it completely.

While she was working on the plans, we began clearing the lot in preparation for the foundation to be poured. This is a picture from the listing, but it was far more overgrown at the time we purchased it.

After some sweat equity, we could finally begin to visualize where our house was going to be located. Here’s what it looked like after several days of work and 24 loads of dirt.

The foundation was poured on September 17th. Don’t you just love all of the trees!? We are in the middle of town, situated in a quiet neighborhood, near a lake with a beautiful park, and just couldn’t be happier with our location!

Next up, the framers got started. This part of the process was so exciting. One week you have a big block of concrete and the next week, there is an actual house. It has been so fun to watch our home be built from the ground up! I can’t image the level of excitement once all the little details start to come to life.

One of my favorite things about our house is all of the windows! This is the view from our office/playroom.

And here we are as of today. The electrician and the framers will hopefully be finishing up early this week and the insulation will be installed by the end of the week if everything goes as planned.

Exciting things happening around here…I’ll be back in a week or two with another update!

And, I'm back! {Quick Recap}

So....I accidentally took a 2 year break! (insert embarrassed emoji here)

It was totally unintentional, but life got a little crazy. When I started this blog, I had a very flexible job as an activities coordinator at a retirement home. I absolutely loved it! The hours were great, the people were the sweetest, my bosses were the best, and I honestly enjoyed what I did. However, it left me with a lot of free time, the pay wasn't what I expected, and my nutrition degree wasn't being utilized. After searching for a job for two and a half years in two different cities, I took whatever I could get and was just thankful they hired me! With that said, I needed something to do in my free time and began exploring other opportunities...that is how The Orderly Home came to be.

While I was working at the retirement home, a job opportunity became available and I decided to interview for it. The only problem was the 1.5 hour daily commute. I was at the point where I needed job experience in my field, and if that meant leaving my house at 7:30 and not getting back home until 6:30, then it was worth it to me. That left me with very little free time and the time I did have, I was very selfish with. I wanted to spend it with my family and friends and recovering from a tiring work week. So, The Orderly Home fell to the wayside and life moved on.

1 year and 8 months later, we sold our house, quit our jobs, relocated for my husband's new job, decided to build a home, and most importantly...

this little stinker joined our family!

Although I would still love to be a professional organizer someday, that isn't my ultimate goal anymore. Organizing is a hobby of mine and it would make me so happy to be able to inspire others with the same interests or those looking to gain control over their clutter. If no one finds this blog interesting or helpful, then that's fine as well. I'm starting back up because I miss this little blog community and finally feel like I have some time to dedicate to it. Things will probably be a little slow around here for a while, but I want to document our build so be on the lookout for that. I can't wait to get moved in and explore every little nook and cranny!

In the meantime, you can follow my "build" Pinterest board to see what direct we're headed in.

Greeting Card Organization

My latest project has been creating a craft closet in our office. I had a dresser in our guest room that wasn't being used and decided to paint and move it into the office to store all of my craft and office supplies. You will get to see the finished product next week, but I thought I would show you one of the things I've created in the process.

I LOVE snail mail and I aspire to be the kind of person that sends cards to people on their birthday and other special occasions. The problem is finding the right one considering they are kind of scattered all over our house.

The remedy: I found a photo storage box (similar) for $1.99 that happened to be the perfect size. I didn't realize it until I got home, but the dividers were included. Score! I created labels to divide the cards into three sections: blank, thank you, and birthday. I have another box ready to go when I come across different categories of cards I want to buy. (i.e. get well soon, sympathy, happy anniversary)

You can see the color I chose for the cabinet...it's a little bold, but I love it. I can't wait to show you the finished project next week. There's that and the launch of my Etsy Shop!!! Exciting things happening over here. Thank you for sticking with me through the last few weeks as things have been a little slow.

Happy Organizing!

Organizing on the Cheap: Dollar Tree

I love The Container Store and if I had an unlimited budget, I would shop there for all of my storage needs. But do you know what I love even more than The Container Store? Bargains! And that's exactly what I'm going to show you today.

First, here are a few projects I've done using items found at Dollar Tree or Dollar General:

Speaking of bargains, I went to Dollar Tree this morning on a mission to find the best organization supplies I could for $20. So, how do you think I did?

I had so much fun browsing through the store, and I think I found some pretty great items!

1. File Folders
I've had the most difficult time finding cute file folders around my town, and I totally would have snatched these up if I didn't just order some online. You can't beat 3 file folders for $1! Use them like this,

 2. Multi-Purpose Clips
These are great for the pantry. We received some like these as a wedding gift and use them all the time.
3. Drawer Organizers
They had two different sizes of these cups and I thought they would be perfect for organizing junk drawers. You could place some museum putty on the bottom so they don't slide around when you open and close the drawer.

4.Magnetic Photo Frame
I am wishing I would have bought this now. I would use it on my fridge to hold a measurement conversion sheet so I wouldn't have to look it up on my phone every time I couldn't remember how many cups are in a quart!

5. Notebook
They had the cutest notebooks! I always carry one in my purse since I tend to forget things if I don't write them down.

6. Self Stick Felt Pads
These come in handy when you have a basket on a shelf that doesn't slide very well. Just stick these on the bottom and problem solved!

7. 2014 Desk Calendar
I love the print on this calendar, and it's just the right size to keep on your desk at work or in your home office.

8 & 9. Stackable Bins.
I love these things. They had a couple of different versions and several colors to choose from.

10. Plastic Storage Container
I thought that these would be great for storing your kids toys or using as wastebaskets. They had orange and a really pretty plum color.

11. Magnetic Clips
For holding menus, shopping lists, artwork, and coupons. There were also some of these in the office section, but I was drawn to the bright colors of these found in the kitchen section.

12. Decorative Tape
This was my favorite find of the day! They had 11 different patterns to choose from. I may have gone a little overboard and bought 10! You could use this tape for this, this, this, this, this, or this.

13, 14 & 15 Storage Containers
These containers were so tiny and would be perfect for organizing craft supplies or office accessories. They were 3 for $1.

These came in a package of 2 for $1.

These weren't as sturdy, but at 20 cents a piece, I was sold.

16. Adhesive Drawer Liner
Dollar Tree had a ton of options for drawer liner. These help add a pop of color to an otherwise boring spot, and makes organizing a little more fun.

17. Wire Storage Bins
These are the exact kind I used to organize my bathroom drawer (shown above). They are sturdy, and there are several different sizes and shapes. These are so wonderful because you can create your own configurations depending on your drawer size.

18. Ice Cube Tray
2 for $1. I've seen these used to store earrings, rings, bobbin, MAC eyeshadow, and to corral items in a junk drawer.

19. Glass Containers with Screw-on Lid
Another great container for craft storage! Imagine a bunch of these lined up with colorful items stored inside.

So, have I convinced you to go to Dollar Tree yet!? When I start a project, I always head to my local dollar stores before hitting up The Container Store website. I can usually find something that works for a whole lot cheaper.

Happy Organizing!!!

Storing T-Shirts

After organizing our DVD's, I left you with this image.

A big empty drawer, aka an organizer's dream!

After thinking on it for a couple of weeks, I decided that it would be the perfect spot for all of our t-shirts. We use the Real Simple Slim Hangers (which I love, btw) in our closet. Since they are a little pricey, I feel like it's a waste to used them on t-shirts considering I would have to buy two boxes just for our t-shirts alone. Crazy!

Since discovering the Flip Fold, I have been folding t-shirts just for the fun of it, and storing them in the cubby holes we have built into our closets. They always seem to end up in the floor, and it's inconvenient if you want to get to a shirt that is on the bottom of the pile.

This drawer is just the right spot for them and the Flip Fold allows me to fold the shirts so that they are all the same size, and I can pack them in there just like a can of sardines...in a good way. Even if a few are taken out as we wear them, the other shirts stay standing upright and the space is held until it is washed, folded, and returned.

I'm so happy our t-shirts have a home now! I like this set-up because you don't have to move anything out of the way to get the shirt you want to wear.  We can just reach in there, grab the one we want, and head out the door. As an added bonus, it gives me extra room in my closet for more clothes. AND, that makes me one happy camper!

* Still trying to figure out if it's worth it to send my camera in for repair, so please bear with me and these crummy iPhone pictures.
