DVD Storage

I don’t know about y’all, but space is limited at our house. My remedy to that problem is to get rid of items we can do without, and maximize the storage that we do have.

This armoire was graciously given to us and although I would rather have a dresser with a ton of drawers, this is what I have to work with for the time being. Up until yesterday, the armoire’s single drawer housed all of our DVD’s, and even though they were put away and organized, I knew I wasn’t maximizing the space to it’s fullest potential.

We’ve all seen those binders that are made to store CD’s and DVD’s, but those aren’t for me. I prefer to keep our DVD’s in alphabetical order and would have to rotate each one anytime we bought a new movie. Ain’t nobody got time for that! So when I stumbled upon these Memorex Sleeves, I knew they would be perfect for storing our DVD’s in the least amount of space as possible.

So, as I do with any project, I pulled out the movies that we didn’t want anymore, leaving me with this:

I designated a color for each category and transferred the DVD’s from their cases to the correct colored sleeve.

Pink- Girly Movies Romantic Comedies
Blue-Series
Purple-Comedy
Green-Video Games
Orange- Action/Drama

I labeled each category with Post-It Tabs and my label maker*, and placed the sleeves in a container from Tuesday Morning. (similar option)

See how much space I saved!

Now, I’m left with a big empty drawer and am pumped (more than any normal person should be) to figure out what I can store in there!

* Can I just say that I am obsessed with this label maker!  I have no idea how I survived without one in my life for the past 25 years!!!

What a cool idea and a huge space saver! Can I ask what you did with the DVD cases of the movies that you ended up keeping? Did you get rid of them altogether or save them and store them somewhere?

I am saving them for the time being. I just packed them up in a box and am storing that in the attic. If I don't use them in the next 6 months for anything, I'll get rid of them.

My husband would have a PANIC attack if I threw away the DVD boxes! Like full on HISSY fit!! I can't make reasoning of his madness, but I must make do. I will admire your organization and extra space from afar.

What a great idea!! Are your CD sleeves plastic or paper? And where did you purchase them from? I have to try this!!

They are plastic and I found them at Office Max.

I did this a few months ago. I went from 2 drawers (full) to a 2 small boxes like yours. Recycled all the cases (just kept a few in case I lend them to someone or bring to school (work). I also put the inserts in ABC order (just like dvds) in a box in case I need to refer to them.

Hi Kristin! I LOVE this idea, but I must caution you on this. While the plastic sleeves seem like a great idea, when I went to go purchase them, I saw the reviews were very negative. I then saw where long term storage is not recommended with these. The reason is they leave a film (I am sure some of us know this film from our cleaning adventures with plastics stored) It is that white plastic equivalent of soap scum residue type film.

Since you have not had yours long, you probably haven't had any issues with it yet. However, after seeing 19 people stating it was the worst mistake of their life and some had disks that were ruined, I don't want any broken hearted organizers out there upset because they just spent 3 hours going through their collection, transferring them all, having their husband toss all the cases in the recycling bin in between football commercial breaks, only to run out of sleeves and go to order more and see these reviews and get freaked out and have to a) dig out and re-instate said dvd cases or b)get the more expensive less appealing jewel cases...not that I am speaking from tonight's experience ;-)

Anyway, hoping to save some from a costly disaster!
